The Narrative

Building a stronger community through compassion, support, and meaningful action. Together, we can create lasting change.

Our Story

Why Beyond The
Narrative Was Created

Beyond The Narrative was created to address an important gap in research and public awareness. While intimate partner violence continues to receive attention, limited research exists on the experiences of male victims. Our goal is to build a nonprofit dedicated to funding independent research, raising awareness, and encouraging evidence-based conversations that support every victim equally. This initiative is about asking the questions that haven’t been fully explored and helping create a stronger foundation for future understanding.

The Problem

The Problem We're
Trying To Solve

Many men experiencing intimate partner abuse remain underrepresented in research, public discussion, and available data. Without accurate evidence, it becomes difficult to understand the true scale of the issue or develop informed policies and support systems. Our mission is to help bridge this research gap through independent studies and community awareness.

A Milestone For Change

Our submission to Parliament

In 2026, Beyond the Narrative made a submission to the House Standing Committee on Social Policy and Legal Affairs’ Inquiry into the Relationship Between Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence and Suicide. Drawing on AIHW data and coronial review findings, our submission set out the evidence for a significant, under-recognised gap in support and data collection for male victims of DFV — and its link to suicide.

The Committee has accepted and authorised our submission for publication as formal evidence to the inquiry. You can read it in full on the official Parliament of Australia website.

The Missing Data on Male Suicide

Domestic and family violence is usually discussed as a story about homicide. But homicide is only one of the ways it ends in death. This information guide from Beyond the Narrative 2026 (BTN2026) looks at a second, much larger pathway: suicide, and what the data shows once that pathway is properly counted. Drawing on figures from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) and the Australian Domestic and Family Violence Death Review Network (ADFVDRN), it sets out why Australia’s data on domestic violence and male suicide has a significant, measurable gap, and what would be needed to close it. Available as a free PDF or Word download.

Share Your Story

If you’ve experienced intimate partner abuse, your voice matters — and it’s missing from the data. By sharing your story, even anonymously, you can help build the evidence needed to improve research, awareness, and support services. You control what you share, and your identity can remain completely anonymous.

How It Works

Share Your Story

Tell us your story. Call us or send an email, in your own words, at whatever length feels right.

Create Your Story

We write it up using AI's help, and may soften or change some details. Our team turns your call or email into a script based on what you said. Some details, such as names, locations, or specifics that could identify you or affect an ongoing legal matter, may be softened or changed so the story can be told safely.

Review for Safety

We review it for anything that still can't be safely published. We'll check the script for anything else that could identify you or create legal risk before it moves forward.

Tell It Anonymously

An AI avatar tells your story. A synthetic face and voice, never yours, delivers it on video or audio. Your real identity is never shown or used.

What We Do

Stories That Matter

Explore anonymous stories shared by our community through AI-generated avatars. Every story helps raise awareness and encourages meaningful conversations.

How We Use Real Stories, and Where AI Fits In

Every story on this site comes from a real person. Nothing is invented
or exaggerated. To protect the people who share their experience with
us, every story is told anonymously through an AI-generated avatar, a
synthetic face and voice that narrates the story on the person’s
behalf. The AI never invents anything; it’s a way of telling the story
without exposing who told it.

Every Contribution Makes A Difference

Whether you choose to donate, volunteer, partner with us, or simply share our mission, your support helps move this initiative forward. Together, we can build stronger research, increase public awareness, and create meaningful change for future generations.

Donate

BTN2026 runs on the time and pockets of a small team of three. Every dollar goes toward the research, submissions, and advocacy work that closes the data gap on domestic violence and male suicide, things like AIHW data access, printing and distributing materials, and eventually building out the support services men are currently missing out on. We’re not yet a registered charity, so donations aren’t tax-deductible at this stage, but every contribution is used directly for the cause. You can support us via GoFundMe.

Partnership

BTN2026 is a small team doing a lot with limited hands. We’re looking for people who can help with research, writing and content, admin and organisation, or advocacy and outreach. You don’t need formal qualifications, just care about the cause and reliability. If you’d like to get involved, reach out and tell us what you’re good at.

Volunteer

We’re looking to work with researchers, government agencies, other advocacy organisations, and businesses who want to help close the data gap on domestic violence and male suicide in Australia. Whether that’s sharing data, co-authoring research, supporting our parliamentary advocacy, or backing our work financially, we’re open to conversations about what a partnership could look like. Get in touch to talk it through.

Frequently Asked
Questions

Why was Beyond The Narrative created?

Beyond The Narrative was created to address gaps in research and public awareness around intimate partner violence, particularly the experiences of male victims. We aim to support independent research, raise awareness, and encourage evidence-based conversations that recognise every victim.

Men experiencing intimate partner abuse can be underrepresented in research, public discussion, and available data. Better evidence can help improve understanding, awareness, policies, and support systems.

You can contact us by phone or email and share your experience in your own words and at whatever length feels comfortable. You can choose to remain anonymous.

Stories are reviewed for identifying details and potential legal risks. Names, locations, and other details may be changed or softened where necessary. Stories are presented using a synthetic AI-generated face and voice rather than the real person’s identity.

Funds support research, submissions, awareness work, legal and compliance requirements, and the development of future initiatives and support services.

Evidence-Awareness

Beyond the Narrative 2026 exists because the data on domestic, family and sexual violence in Australia has a gap: male victims are significantly under-recognised, under-researched, and under-supported.

We draw on Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) data, coronial review findings, and peer-reviewed research, including the Desmarais et al. meta-analysis on gender symmetry in intimate partner violence, to build an accurate picture of who is affected by DFV and how it intersects with suicide risk.

This isn’t about downplaying the experiences of female victims and survivors. It’s about ensuring the full picture is visible, so that services, policy, and public understanding reflect what the evidence actually shows, not just the parts of the story that get told.

The data doesn’t speak for itself. Someone has to put it in front of the people who can act on it. That’s what we do.

Research Gaps

Australia’s DFV research and data collection has largely been built around female victims, and that work matters. But it means male victims are often invisible in the numbers: undercounted in prevalence data, underrepresented in coronial reviews, and rarely factored into suicide-risk research despite emerging evidence of a link.

This isn’t a claim that male and female experiences of DFV are identical. It’s a claim that the evidence base is incomplete, and incomplete evidence produces incomplete policy.

We identify where the data goes quiet, and treat that silence as a research question, not a conclusion.

Gaps in the evidence don’t close themselves. Help us find where they are and push to fill them.
